Club Active member, Marion shares her fitness journey to celebrate Seniors Week

18 August 2020

As a provider of health and fitness facilities that cater to the over 50s demographic in the community, Club Active wished to celebrate Queensland Seniors Week which provides opportunities to promote positive community attitudes towards older people and ageing.

We spoke with Club Active Burleigh member, Marion Loadsman who at 81 years of age has some inspiring words to share.

When did you join Club Active?

I joined Club Active as soon as it opened in Burleigh at the end of November 2019.

Have you been to a gym or played sport before coming to Club Active?

I started at my first gym when I was about 30 years old and have attended gyms from time to time ever since. I also played sports, mainly squash or tennis, until a few years ago. When I lived in places where a gym or sporting facilities were not available, I exercised by walking a lot.

What was your main goal when you started your fitness journey with Club Active?

My main goal is for general good cardiovascular health, as well as maintaining flexibility and healthy bone density. I believe good health contributes to a positive outlook on life.

What improvements have you noticed since you started exercising at Club Active?

When recommencing at a gym after a lengthy break, it takes me about three months before I feel positive changes to my flexibility. I had just reached the three-month stage when Club Active had to close down for a couple of months due to COVID-19 lockdown. It is now two-months since Club Active reopened and I’m building on my earlier attendance, I believe my flexibility is already improving.

Do you have any physical obstacles, and if so how do you manage them?

About six years ago I incurred a slight neck injury when doing some heavy lifting in the garden. Some small neck pain lets me know when to ease off.

With it being QLD Seniors Week, are there any suggestions you would like to share?

As we age it is important to do some physical activity, no matter how small- it will pay dividends. When starting any exercise, ease into it over a period of time, and be aware of your limits.

This year Queensland Seniors Week runs from 15-23 August 2020 as a part of Queensland Government’s and Council on the Ageing (COTA) vision of building age-friendly communities in Queensland.
