The team at Club Active is incredibly excited to announce the opening of our 7th club as we expand into the community of Castle Hill, Sydney. Located at Hills Supercentre, opening early 2022! Club Active Castle Hill is an over 50s health and fitness centre with an in-house allied health clinic offering professional services from dietitians, physiotherapists, and exercise physiologists.
We sat down with the Club Manager of Castle Hill, Exercise Physiologist Heather Martin, to learn more about her journey to Club Active.
Fun Facts about Heather:
- I grew up in Newcastle and moved to Sydney 6 years ago for studies and work.
- I love trying new things and learning new skills!
- I have always done a lot of recreational activities including; outdoor recreation like caving, sailing, snowboarding. Currently, my new go-to is stand-up paddleboarding.
- I also enjoy gymnastics, aerial silks, aerial trapeze & rock climbing.
- I love reading, but rarely let myself read as nothing else gets done when I’m engrossed in a good story.
- I like to try my hand at different projects, even if I’m not very good at it- I just like giving it a go; like sewing and repairing my clothing, building or refurbishing furniture, gardening.
What qualifications / experience do you aim to share with the Club Active community?
My current qualifications include:
- Masters of Exercise Physiology
- Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science
- Certificate 3 and 4 Fitness
My experience in the health and fitness industry started when I was 16 when I started working as a gymnastics coach. After completing my cert 3 and 4 in Fitness, I began my Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise and Sports Science. I was working as a personal trainer and group fitness instructor at a local nursing home during my studies. Between finishing my Bachelor’s and Master’s, I did a volunteer internship in an Orthopaedic hospital in Mumbai India. When I moved to Sydney I started my first job as an Accredited Exercise Scientist, completing workplace assessments while I studied for my Masters.
Since starting my career as an Exercise Physiologist I have made it my mission to learn everything that our industry has to offer, and learn how to help a variety of different clinical populations; at one stage just after graduating, I was even balancing 6 jobs just to get some experience (haha!).
Whilst working as an Accredited Exercise Physiologist, I have gained a wide range of experience with a variety of health concerns, including:
- Women’s health
- Ageing populations
- Mental health
- Parkinson’s disease
- Chronic pain
- Bariatric surgery
- Metabolic conditions
As a trained exercise professional in your opinion, what is the Club Active difference?
Throughout my experience, I have noticed a disconnect between clinical and community (gym) exercise settings. There was always a point where clients no longer required a clinical setting after progressing with their exercise prescription, however weren’t ready or interested in attending community (gym) facilities. Additionally, too many practitioners were discharging clients without ensuring confidence, including how to self-manage or develop exercise regimes. The result of this is that clients felt uncomfortable in a gym environment, inevitably leading to a lack of motivation and exercise ceases.
When I heard about Club Active, the pieces fell into place and I could see exactly how we could help change this picture and help more people live active lives to regain control over their health. Club Active uniquely offers the over 50s community a safe, welcoming, and non-intimidating environment to exercise safely with expert guidance.
I am so passionate about what we do at Club Active, and my goal is to help develop the next generation of practitioners to continue to change lives. I am also looking forward to helping the Castle Hill community live younger longer, with exercise!
